“Toot your own horn!” Summary

It was a great afternoon of mixing, mingling, and tooting at EMA’s 1st Social. This event was so popular, it was SOLD OUT days before. Our next social is Thursday January 21 after our Legal Update, so please make sure to register early if you want to attend!
McCue Engineering (Lynda Smithard): company started 15 yrs ago by Chris McCue and now has 11 full time and 1 part time staff; ex-professional soccer player on staff; Staff participate in softball league and can speak 6 languages (English, French, Punjabi, Cantonese, Mandarin and Tagalog); all staff have fitbit to encourage healthy lifestyle – like to challenge other companies! Product Care (Mark Kurschner): non-profit association that manages product stewardship programs; rebranding as “Regeneration”; funded by companies that manufacture, produce or sell products they collect; started with paint but have expanded to pesticides, flammable liquids, lighting products, smoke detectors; all across the country except Alberta, with BC collecting the most products.
Dillon Consulting (Bianca Corlett): Integrated corporate sustainability to meet company’s vision and “walk the talk”. Company’s goals: maintain carbon neutrality; waste stream management decrease single occupancy vehicle use and green procurement. Social & community investments involve investing 1% of pre-tax profits; $600K has been donated to date.
AGAT (Andrea Rivers): Andrea has been with AGAT for 2 years and loves it! They have 38 locations across Canada with an Environmental Division in Burnaby; successfully implemented 24hr sample drop off process at several locations in BC; able to respond quickly to client’s needs.
Sustainable Elements (Carlos da Ponte): help companies build better processes by developing tools to use in place of spreadsheets.
Concrete Deliverable: Rachel Forbes, Sharp6, accepted BC EMA’s Concrete Deliverable award on behalf of the Madii Lii Cultural Camp. This group is from Gitsan First Nations and provides First Nations educational programs at a camp. This grant will help fund a project to provide drinking water and hydro power to the camp.
