EMA of BC’s 2021 Indigenous Project Award Winner, Chu Cho Environmental, will be giving a presentation on their winning project.
Here’s the summary: Habitat disturbance, alteration and predation are primary threats to mountain caribou populations in British Columbia. Roads and other linear features are a source of ecosystem degradation and contribute to habitat fragmentation and loss. Chu Cho Environmental and Tsay Keh Dene Nation initiated the Chase Caribou Road Restoration Program in 2019, to restore ecological function to non-status abandoned mineral exploration roads within the Chase herd range. The Chase caribou are a sub populations of southern mountain caribou, and are listed as Threatened under the Federal Species at Risk Act. This presentation will walk through the planning and implementation of this road restoration project, with examples and videos of the techniques being implemented in the field.
